Travel and Accommodations

Nearly 9 million people call New York City home.  The largest city in the United States, the Big Apple, boasts 840 miles of subway tracks, the tallest building in the country (at 1,776 feet), and, most importantly, the place Robert and Brontë fell in love and call home.  We are excited to have all of you share, even briefly, in the majesty of New York City.  To first-timers, and even repeat visitors, New York City is daunting.  However, we prepared a few tips, and set aside great accommodations, to ensure your trip is smooth and enjoyable.

Traveling to New York City

By Air

New York City is served by three major airports, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), and LaGuardia (LGA).  All three airports provide quick access to Manhattan, the capital borough of New York City and the location of all wedding-day events.  We recommend flying to JFK or EWR as both airports provide an inexpensive connection to public transportation and, as international airports, expanded services.

If you are flying to JFK

There are two options, other than renting a car.  You can either take the subway or a taxi/uber.

To take a taxi, follow the signs for ground transportation / taxis after you collect your baggage.  There will be multiple queues outside that will connect you to New York City’s famous yellow taxis.  A yellow cab generally costs about $75-$80, but this could vary depending on the time of day.  If you have the Uber app, you can also call a car to pick you up.  If you would like to use an Uber, ensure you tell the Uber app the correct terminal and ground transportation pickup zone (these are clearly marked outside each terminal).  Uber trips into Manhattan generally cost about $60, and the advantage of an Uber over a traditional taxi is that your price is locked-in from the start and you can track your trip on a live map, so there will be no surprises once you are let off at your hotel.

The cheaper option for most, and often the fastest, is to travel via the NYC subway system.  The cost is $7.75 per-person ($5 to use the AirTrain connection and $2.75 to ride the subway).  Once you collect your luggage, follow signs for the AirTrain.  Board the train terminating at Jamaica Station.  After exiting the AirTrain at Jamaica Station, you will need to purchase a MetroCard.  Up to four people can share the same Metro Card, but it must be “swiped” once for each passenger by handing the card back to the next person AFTER passing through the fare gate.  You will need at least $7.75 per-person placed on the card to ensure you have sufficient funds to travel.  You will also be charged a $1 new card fee.  After exiting Jamaica Station, follow signs for the E train (blue line with the letter E).  Board the Manhattan bound E train terminating at World Trade Center.  If you are taking the subway to our preferred hotel (The Hudson) take the train to Port Authority Bus Terminal / Times Square 42nd Street and follow signs for the 1 train (Red lines with the number 1) ensuring that you board on the UPTOWN platform.  So long as you do not leave the station, you will not be charged a second time.  Your stop will be 59th St Columbus Circle.

If you are flying to EWR

Other than renting a car, your best option is to take NJTransit to New York Penn Station.

After securing your luggage, follow signs to the AirTrain, and take the train towards Newark Liberty International Airport Station.  Once you arrive, you will need to purchase an NJTransit ticket for each member of your group to New York Penn Station.  Tickets are $13.00 per-adult and $9 for each child and senior citizen (65 or older).  The price of the ticket includes the $5 AirTrain charge.  You can buy your tickets from the machines located in front of the fare gates or via the NJTransit App.  Schedule times can also be checked via the NJTransit Schedules page.  Trains to New York Penn generally arrive every 20 minutes.  New York Penn Station is the last stop.  If you are traveling to our preferred hotel (The Hudson), follow signs for the 1 train (Red lines with the number 1).  The fare is $2.75 per-person.  You will need to buy a MetroCard from the vending machines located in the subway station.  Up to four people can share the same Metro Card, but it must be “swiped” once for each passenger by handing the card back to the next person AFTER passing through the fare gate.  Your stop will be 59th St Columbus Circle.

If you are flying to LGA

LaGuardia does not have an easy connection to the subway system or other nearby train.  The best way to travel from LGA is by taxi or Uber.  To take a taxi, follow the signs for ground transportation / taxis after you collect your baggage.  There will be multiple queues outside that will connect you to New York City’s famous yellow taxis.  A yellow cab generally costs about $50-$60, but this could vary depending on the time of day.  If you have the Uber app, you can also call a car to pick you up.  Uber trips into Manhattan generally cost about $45, and the advantage of an Uber over a traditional taxi is that your price is locked-in from the start and you can track your trip on a live map, so there will be no surprises once you are let off at your hotel.

Car

If you live in the tri-state area, we recommend that you utilize public transportation (such as NJTransit and Metro North) rather than driving into the city if possible.  Should you wish to drive, your best options are to enter New York city from either the Lincoln Tunnel (from New Jersey) or the Queensboro Bridge (if coming from within New York City – via Route 25).  If you are coming from West of New York City, take either Interstate 78 East or Interstate 80 East merging onto Interstate 95 (North if coming from I-78 and South if coming from I-80) towards I-495.  Follow signs for the Lincoln Tunnel and be prepared to pay a toll.  The Lincoln Tunnel toll is about $10-$15 depending on the time of day.  You will not pay a toll leaving New York City.  If you are staying at our preferred hotel (The Hudson) you should negotiate parking with your room.  Otherwise, parking is available on the street, for free, and at numerous garages.
